How to Read Your Navamsa (D9) Chart
The most important divisional chart in Vedic astrology, and what it reveals about your soul path.
If your Rasi chart shows the surface of your life, the Navamsa — the ninth divisional chart, or D9 — shows the depth. Ancient acharyas held that no reading is complete without cross-referencing the D9. It reveals the strength of every planet in its mature form, the true nature of your marriage, and the dharmic path your soul incarnated to walk.
The Navamsa is calculated by dividing each 30° rashi into nine equal parts of 3°20' each. Every planet's Navamsa placement shows its 'inner' expression — how it behaves in the second half of life, after ego and youth have settled.
A planet that is weak in the Rasi but strong in the Navamsa (called Vargottama when it sits in the same sign in both) becomes powerful in your 30s and 40s. Many late bloomers have this pattern. Conversely, a planet strong in Rasi but weak in D9 shines early and fades — the child prodigy who plateaus.
For marriage specifically, the 7th house of the Navamsa is more important than the 7th of the Rasi. A benefic there — Jupiter, Venus, Mercury — indicates a harmonious, growth-oriented spouse regardless of what the Rasi 7th shows.
